Tackling the attainment gap by preventing and responding to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
The government guides Pupil Equity Funding and its use for education and local authorities. The government’s strategy relating to ACEs is captured in its Getting It Right For Every Child strategy (GIRFEC, 2018). This policy paper centred on the Scottish nation and linked ACEs to the educational attainment gap and how Pupil Equity Funding can be utilised to reduce that gap. It connects ACEs, e.g., to poverty, parental drug and alcohol abuse, parental incarceration, physical or sexual abuse or neglect, poorer physical and mental health in adulthood and risky health behaviours. The paper focuses on preventing ACEs and supporting the resilience of children in overcoming early life adversity in education by looking at learning and behaviour, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for learning, offering a holistic and child-centred approach, meaningful relationships and the planning and action on the use of funding and additional resources to reduce the attainment gap. Forthcoming work from NHS Health Scotland centres on reducing inequalities in educational outcomes by reviewing the social determinants of health.
