Refugee Law and Policy: Japan
The Policies of the Japanese Government regarding the acquisition of refugee status are stringent, and Japan is not a preferred destination due to its rigour. In 2014, 5,000 refugees applied for the recognition of their status and only 11 applications were approved. Refugees have six months to apply for refuge during this time; they are not allowed to work or relocate to a different part of Japan. That being said, conditions and requirements are not the same for child refugees as they have to separately apply (even if they disembarked in Japan with their parents), and the Government provides humanitarian and financial assistance for occupation, special education etc. The present articles describe in detail all those mentioned above.
