Maltepe District Relieves the Pain of Their Syrian Fellows: Diagnosis and Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) of Syrian Children
The District Governorship of Maltepe and the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees developed a project for Syrian refugee children entitled Maltepe District Relieves the Pain of Their Syrian Fellows: Diagnosis and Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Within the project’s scope, the first phase was to examine refugee children for PTSD symptoms who had fled to Turkey for asylum. According to the official records, 204 Syrian children were reached, and 59% (121) were identified as average/heavily/major-level traumatic sufferers of migration and war.
In the second phase, the therapy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was applied to rehabilitate these Syrian Children by clinical psychologists and psychological consultants.
Statistical Data of the Project; among the Syrian children who had participated in the therapy:
• decrease in the level of PTSD by 85%
• increase in the level of psychological well-being by 65%
• decrease in the level of major depression by 54%
