Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): educational interventions
The Scottish charity company Iriss wants to improve the social services sector’s use of knowledge and research. Through the partnership, they connect expertise, knowledge and experience by sharing knowledge creatively. They resourced a paper published in 2018 on adverse childhood experiences and educational interventions. The paper aimed to identify evidence around ACEs and trauma-informed approaches in education and the impact of ACEs on educational outcomes. There was an evidence gap in the Scottish context about the efficacy of interventions. Various interventions on government and school-based levels were discussed. For example, the Attachment Awareness School Program (see link for evaluation report), where schools (primary and secondary) had an Attachment Awareness whole staff development day and a two-hour Emotion Coaching session. This was followed by activities and training on attachment, trauma and nurturing strategies run by the ‘Attachment Lead Teacher at the senior level in each school. The program’s evaluation revealed that teachers and pupils reported a positive impact on pupils’ well-being. The paper published on Iriss also links to other resources and relevant ACEs organisations outside Scotland.
