A Trauma Informed Approach
In 2016 The British Council of Greece commenced a non-formal educational intervention program in the Skaramagas camp. Teachers worked with school psychologists alongside the intervention, whilst a trauma-informed model radically influenced the pedagogical approach. Refugee children’s capacity to learn is heavily affected by mental traumas, constantly impacting their behaviour; so, if the classroom environment is a harsh experience, refugee children will find it much harder to settle down to learn. That said, teachers were coached about the emotional blocks that children may have, focusing on building secure teacher-to-refugee relationships. Once the connection was strengthened, both parties could proceed with the learning material.
