National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI)
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network – USA (NCTSN), in collaboration with SAMHSA-USA (the Substances Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), supported the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) launched by SAMHSA-USA aimed to improve the treatment and services for children, adolescents, and families who have experienced traumatic events. The National Child, Traumatic Stress Network, comprises frontline providers, family members, researchers and national partners that aim to change the course of children’s lives by improving their care across the US by implementing beneficial scientific evidence into practice. Various resources are provided on the website (including in Spanish) to support caregivers, families and schools. For example, offering guidance to parents on how to respond to the following reunification with their traumatised child; a toolkit for health agencies guiding young people after natural disasters; guidance on ACEs screening; and tips for caregivers of asylum-seeking and refugee children following traumatic separation. One of the NCTSN’s resources reflects an understanding of recognising cultural awareness in working with traumatised displaced families by offering guidance on how to be culturally and trauma-informed while providing support to displaced Afghan families.
