Trauma-Informed Practices in Schools Across Two Decades: An Interdisciplinary Review of Research.
As part of a research project approximately 30 studies were reviewed that investigated children in the US and abroad who during their childhood were exposed to various trauma’s (marginalisation, natural disasters, war related trauma, terrorism, etc.) and how interventions impacted on the teaching practices. For example, a link to the resources of the learning network the School for Girls of colour although resources only are accessible once you become a member. As part of the study approaches such as Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS), social emotional learning, restorative practices, mindfulness, emphasis on school culture and climate are identified to provide healing, safety, support, connection and learning for trauma exposed pupils. The authors conclude a multidisciplinary approach is needed for school-based practitioners including incorporating results from pioneering research in neuroscience, psychology and social work to better inform their trauma informed practice.
