Attachment Aware and Trauma Informed School (AAS) Project
Over two years, 23 schools in Warwick participated in the project to enhance the understanding of attachment and trauma and how to address this in education. The project aimed to identify strategies to address the needs of children and build confidence and skills in school staff to address the needs of children who experienced ACEs. In addition, it wanted to promote building positive relationships in schools between adults and children, reduce exclusions, and improve attendance and educational progress and well-being in children. The project focuses on whole-school training, including teaching, non-teaching and allied support staff (e.g., office staff, caretakers, school governors etc.). Staff gained an understanding of attachment theory, the impact of trauma and ACEs on brain development and how children communicate, behave and feel. The findings following the project evaluation reveal headteachers noticed a reduction in serious behaviour incidents and a calmer environment.
