Adverse Childhood Experiences in refugee and asylum-seeking children populations
This Welsh-based project is concerned with understanding how adverse childhood experiences at three life stages (pre-migration, migration journey and post-migration) impact refugee and asylum-seeking children, including learning and cognitive development. The authors argue that parental stress and migration trauma can increase the risk for ACE. The risks of ACE in refugee and asylum-seeking children are discussed, including mental health problems, behavioural problems and academic achievement. Suggestions are offered on how to best support refugee and asylum-seeking children that have experienced adversity, i.e., by developing TRACE (Trauma and ACE) informed services along the pathway of support and by building resilience to adapt to be able to live their new lives
