Developing trauma informed practices in inner London schools- the iTIPS Pilot
A pilot (iTip) ran during 2017 – 2018 through a partnership that involved five Islington primary schools (aimed at year five, i.e., 9-10 years old), the pupil referral unit (PRU )and the local authority seeking to embed trauma-informed practice in schools. The pilot aimed to respond to rising concerns about the most vulnerable young people at risk of and from violence and ACEs in Islington. The ARC framework was implemented to address trauma via three domains: attachment, competence and self-regulation. The findings showed that most pupils in a class believed an adult at school would not listen to them, could not talk to teachers about their problems, and if they needed help, they would find someone to talk to or believed they would be a success. The pilot included the delivery of the ARC (Attachment, Regulation and Competency) framework training programme (from Blaustein and Kinniburgh) to all school staff and partners. Equipping staff in Islington CAMHS (Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health Service) in schools and PRUs teams to lead ARC in Islington schools and to work with staff teams to embed trauma-informed approaches in their work, offering regular staff reflection and consultation.
