The effects of childhood trauma on a child’s brain development
Following a research project conducted by UCL Neuroscience and Brain unit, a guidebook on childhood trauma and the brain was developed and promoted by the UK Trauma Council. The guide is supported by animation, PowerPoint presentations, explainer videos and additional resources to support learning in professionals and frontline carers and is available on the UK Trauma Council’s website. Nine guiding principles supported by research are presented to promote resilience and recovery in children that suffered traumatic experiences. The guiding principles reflect a convergence of neuroscience and clinical practice and can guide professionals and carers. The guidance includes the importance of play for children, relationships with trusted others that support the brain to learn, understanding of untypical and unexpected children’s behaviour, and pausing to reflect and respond in ways that positively impact relationships under strain and on a child’s long-term outcome.
