Education for refugee and asylum-seeking children: Access and quality in England, Scotland and Wales
Experiences from refugees and asylum-seeking children, many from Syria exposed to traumatic events and their parents within UK education (primary, secondary, FE) across three regions. Exploration into the barriers (system, institutional, contextual level) to access and thrive in education. The complex experiences of asylum-seeking and refugee children and post-traumatic stress were acknowledged. Examples and best practices from schools and teachers are discussed. Various measures of types of support for the needs of asylum-seeking and refugee children to stay in education are discussed (e.g. training of school-based staff to build an understanding of issues facing refugee and asylum-seeking children, increase expertise in educational and support needs, dedicated team, a developed mental health toolkit for school staff, and the Schools of Sanctuary movement that provides a range of tools for schools; including an audit/self-assessment kit, evaluation criteria, various action guides, teacher notes, workshop plans and multiple teaching resources.
