Recommendations for Educators About Refugees
Scholars stress the importance of a collaborative and friendly relationship between schoolteachers and young refugees, as many refugees may have come up against discrimination or have been exposed to violence at the hands of the authorities in the past. Trauma at the hands of an authority figure can cause issues for refugee students in the classroom as they may find the classroom authority, the teacher, triggering. Therefore, it is paramount that teachers create a secure environment in response to the refugees’ needs and avoid using material that might be offensive or promote cultural discrimination.
